Vertical Reference Flying

An important skill in flying external load operations is the ability to fly a helicopter while using the ground as a reference (instead of the horizon) and still keep the aircraft and external load under absolute control.

External Load Training

Agencies and companies perform external load operations to lift and transport heavy loads or people with a helicopter using a fixed length cable or rope with one end attached to a hook system on the belly of the aircraft and the other end attached to a securing device. In firefighting, the cable may be attached to a Bambi Bucket to transport and disperse water. In logging operations, the cable may be attached to a grapple to hook and haul trees. In long-line rescue or power-line work, the rope may be attached to one or more body harnesses.

External load training includes both ground and flight training, which provides confidence and skills to pilots performing external load operations. Multiple real-world scenarios are introduced and performed to help prepare pilots for success.
